The CeNT was created in 2011 as an independent organizational unit of the University of Warsaw. The idea behind the creation of CeNT was to build up the strength of the University in chosen areas of research. Initially the CeNT UW crew was composed of four research groups dealing with structural chemistry, molecular biology and environmental sciences.

CeNT UW building was constructed on the cost of 25,5 mln EUR with total space of 18 000 m2, including almost 9000 m2 of laboratory space plus 4500 m2 of didactic/office space, plus servers.

During first months of its activity CeNT UW was headed by Professor Marcin Pałys, whose successor was Professor Piotr Węgleński, former Rector of the University of Warsaw. From 1st March, 2017 the Director of CeNT UW is Professor Agnieszka Chacińska.
